About the course

Instant Theatre‘s introductory acting class is starting again…16th Edition!! Discover and work on the basics of acting and present a final performance on stage with the group. The First steps in Acting course is an original format developed over the years to help newcomers to discover acting for the stage. Everyone can act, and everyone can become a good actor or actress! We all have it in us. This workshop will explore the basic concepts of acting, how to move on stage, how to react and work with partners. We’ll approach how to play different characters on stage, and we’ll perform scripted scenes and dialogues to work on specific aspects of acting (rhythm, expression, basic emotions).

At the beginning, we’ll focus on spontaneity, creativity and how to use our imagination on stage. We’ll play scenes and create situations inspired by our personalities and by the group. Later in the course we’ll start practicing longer scenes, and the final part of the project will see us on stage, presenting a final show made of scripted scenes in front of an audience! We’ll focus on scripted material from the early stages, in order to start playing different roles right away! The activities covered by this course include: group and movement awareness exercises, exercises focused on self-expression and feelings, basics of stage language and stage movement, scene creation, exercises on spontaneity and interactions, basic character building.

Frequently Asked Questions about the course

I have absolutely no experience, can I still join this course?
YES. This program is specifically designed for beginners and people from other artistic disciplines who would like to get to know the basics of acting.

I am shy and get really nervous in front of people, can I join?
YES. A big part of our initial work is get rid of expressive blocks and work around personal difficulties that we all have, so you’re definitely welcome to join and you’ll be in for a good experience. Our classes are extremely supportive and you’ll have all the group on your side at all times.

I have some previous acting experience, can I join?
The best thing for you is to get in contact and tell us about your previous experience. If you’ve already performed in public as an actress in a play or a theatre production in the past, you might be eligible for our Level 2 course. Otherwise this course will be probably the best match for you. Please use the Contact form.

Are there any trial classes for this course?
No. The program is only 8-week long, hence we need to use our time from the very beginning for our program. If you are not sure about joining, you can navigate our website to watch some TESTIMONIALS and get more info about what we do or watch our new Youtube videos! You can also show up at our venue in Berlin Wedding and see some of our shows. In short: we’ll bring the quality, but you will have bring the commitment from the start to the end of the project.

My English is not so good, can I still join?
YES. If you’re able to read the contents on this page, then your English will be good enough to join. Our participants come from all over the world and it’s not unusual for us in a group of 10 people to have 8-9 different nationalities (and accents) on board. It’s part of the nature of what we do.

I’m joining for professional reasons to work on public speaking, presentation skills and so on, is this course a good choice for me?
YES. Acting addresses many of these aspects naturally and in a creative way, so at the end of the course you’ll definitely be more relaxed and more self-confident on stage and in public. You can talk to us if you’re interested in some specific extra training, but a very good first step to improve your public presentation skills is to take part in our introductory course.

What if there’s a new lockdown and we cannot complete the live course?
Good question. If there will be new restrictions to our activities we’ll evaluate where we’re at in the course. If we’re only missing a few sessions and the show, we can consider to wait and complete the course as soon as it’s allowed. Otherwise a refund of the fee will be possible, minus a deduced amount for each acting session we’ve completed before the interruption.

What else should I consider before registering?
The most important aspect for you is to make sure that you can attend most of the sessions. If you miss one or two classes it will be fine, but missing more might limit what you learn from the course and might affect the preparation of the whole group, so please check your schedule and make sure you can attend the classes as well as the final show.

3 important skills for actors

Acting is a behavioral discipline made of many conscious and subconscious processes happening at once. In this short post we’re going to overview 3 important skills for actors and performers. These aspects are only the beginning of the story, as there is much more happening at the same time. But if you’re new to acting, or you’re looking for a clear definition of what’s happening within you when you act, here is some info.

Skill n.1 – Listening

When we talk about “listening” in acting, we are not really referring to the simple act of listening with our ears. The skill that is used in acting could be really defined as perception, developing the ability of hearing, orientating, perceiving your position in relation to other actors. And then of course listening to their words, to their lines and to the way they play their part, of course, in order to react properly and naturally. In other words, listening in acting is the skill of staying open to the environment of the stage.

Skill n.2 – Feeling

Feeling in acting is the ability of getting affected by what is happening on stage, and be transformed by it. The dramatic moments of the play should affect our character and change us, in order for us to act congruently in the play. A little transformation must happen within every interaction and every exchange on stage. The way our stage partner talks to us will change us. The way they look at us and the dynamics in place between the characters will change our character and the nature of the interaction. Feeling, in acting, is really the ability of being constantly transformed. As in our daily life, where we’re getting affected and transformed by every interaction, so we should be on stage, in order to shape a vibrant stage reality that feels “real”.

Skill n.3 – Coordination

At the core of acting there’s a two-sided process. If one one hand you have to stay in the moment, ready to react naturally and unleash your spontaneous creativity, on the other hand you’ll have to constantly be aware of the structure of the play, of its script, aware of what’s about to happen in order to adhere to the plan. This typical “split” state of consciousness, so often described in all performative arts, is a delicate balance between conscious and subconscious actions, and it has to be trained consistently in order to kick in and sustain the actors during the performance. Coordination in acting is the ability to unleash your creativity within the boundaries of a predefined, rehearsed performance structure.
