Instant Theatre Berlin presents the 4th Edition of our intensive summer acting workshop in Berlin! This year we’ll focus exclusively on scene work. We will explore and expand on the basic acting principles in a supportive atmosphere within an international group. How to play a scene and dive into the reality of the situation right away? What are the basic skills that allow an actor to quickly “become” the character and communicate a sense of truth to the audience?

ALL ABOUT OUR SUMMER ACTING WORKSHOP
This intensive acting course will give you a chance to work on your stage presence in relation to other actors, your surrounding stage reality, and the audience. At the workshop, each participant will spend a lot of time playing scripted scenes on stage, exploring acting techniques to follow internal creative impulses and “own” the performance. We will be working on acting exercises that refine stage presence, concentration and charisma.

In each of our intensive sessions, we will be working both as a group and individually with acting exercises that explore creativity, presence, and emotional expression. We will use scripted dialogues and monologues to help us out in the process. The depth of the activities will depend on the quality and the experience level of the group. Our purpose in the summer intensive acting course is always to welcome a variety of actors from different backgrounds and experience levels, in order to give them an opportunity to work on their acting for a few days in an inspirational environment.

SCHEDULE:
Saturday July 22, 11-3.30 pm (4 hours + break): intro, group work, basic scene work on stage.
Sunday July 23, 11-3.30 pm (4 hours + break): character work, work on emotions, scene work.
Saturday July 29, 11-3.30 pm (4 hours + break): stage language, script analysis, scene work.
Sunday July 30, 11-3.30 pm (4 hours + break): Improvisation and expansion on scene work, filming of scenes, conclusion.

NOTE: As summer time is a busy time for everyone, this year it will be possible to register for both weekends of the workshop (at a better price) or for one weekend only!
Activities will be different on each weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions about the course

I have little or no acting experience, can I still join this course?
YES, as long as you are willing to challenge yourself and get to play with people who might have some acting experience already. If you feel intimidated by acting and in general you feel you still need to build up some self-confidence, you can refer to our First Steps in Acting program that is specifically designed to address these topics.

I have some previous acting experience, can I join?
YES, due to the variety and the structure of the activities, this class is suitable for all levels, from the more expert performers to the newcomers. We usually host a number of returning students from previous Instant Theatre projects as well.

Are there any trial classes for this course?
NO. The program is short and intensive, hence we need to use our time from the very beginning for our program. You can also show up at our venue in Berlin Wedding and see some of our shows. In short: we’ll bring the quality and the expertise, but you will have to bring the commitment from the start to the end of the project.

My English is not so good, can I still join?
YES. If you’re able to read the contents on this page, then your English will be good enough to join. Our participants come from all over the world and it’s not unusual for us in a group of 10 people to have 8-9 different nationalities (and accents) on board. It’s part of the nature of what we do, and we are proud of that!

I’m joining for professional reasons to work on public speaking, presentation skills and so on, is this course a good choice for me?
YES, however this project is 100% focused on acting and stage acting, so if you have no previous acting experience and you exclusively need advice about public speaking or presenting, you should book our 1:1 acting training programs. Our First Steps in Acting course is also a very good first step to improve your performative skills.

All about our acting course!

Instant Theatre Berlin’s First Steps in Acting course is starting again in MAY 2023 for its 24th edition! Every year, dozens of acting enthusiasts take this class in order to explore the basics of acting on stage: they learn how to get into the right creative mindset for acting, how to play different roles and characters, they play on stage for the public in our final performance… Most of all, they discover how to be good actors on stage, how to be confident and communicate powerful emotions, and so can you!

Our acting exercises and techniques are constantly updated, and our formats are created specifically for each new group, but our original idea is always at the core of it: EVERYONE CAN ACT, because ACTING IS A NATURAL ABILITY that we all have! On this page you will find a summary of the activities, as well as the schedule of our upcoming introductory acting course. The class is aimed at complete beginners and at people with little previous experience (i.e. participation in school plays).

At the beginning of the class, we’ll focus on spontaneity, self-expression, creativity and how to use our imagination on stage. We’ll play short scenes and enact situations inspired by our personalities and by the group, in order to get to know each other and get into the right mindset to work together. You can expect to be on stage from Day 1, and you’ll enjoy the experience! Later in the course, we’ll start practising longer scenes, and the final part of the project will see us on stage, playing our scenes in the final show in front of the audience! The First Steps in Acting course is very practical, dynamic and hands-on, and at the class we’ll focus on scripted material from early on, in order to start playing around with different roles on stage right away.

The activities covered by this course include group and awareness exercises, exercises to develop self-expression and expression of feelings and emotions, the basics of stage language and stage movement, scene creation, exercises on spontaneity and interactions, as well as basic character building. Our groups are made of internationals (18+) from all over the world. The classes are entirely in English and take place in Berlin, Germany.

This course is ideal for people who:

  • Want to learn to act, speak and react authentically playing scenes on stage

I have absolutely no experience, can I still join this course?
YES. This program is specifically designed for beginners and people from other artistic disciplines who would like to get to know the basics of acting.

I am shy and get really nervous in front of people, can I join?
YES. A big part of our initial work is focused on allowing you to get rid of your expressive blocks. We’ll work around the personal difficulties that we all have, so you’re definitely welcome to join and you’ll be in for a good experience. Our classes are extremely supportive and you’ll have all the group on your side at all times. In this video I explained more about this topic, please watch it before joining!

I have some previous acting experience, can I join?
The best thing for you is to get in contact and tell us about your previous experience. If you’ve already performed in public as an actress in a play or a theatre production in the past, you might be eligible for our Level 2 course. Otherwise this course will be probably the best match for you. Please use the Contact form.

YES. Acting addresses many of these aspects naturally and in a creative way, so at the end of the course you’ll definitely be more relaxed and more self-confident on stage and in public. Still, if you need 100% focused and individual advice about public speaking or acting, you should book our 1:1 acting training programs. Our introductory course is certainly a very good first step to improve your performative skills.

What if there’s a new lockdown and we cannot complete the live course? What are the COVID regulations?
If there will be future restrictions to our activities, we’ll evaluate where we’re at in the course. If we’re only missing a few sessions and the show, we can consider to wait and complete the course as soon as it’s allowed. Otherwise a partial refund of the fee will be possible. We run our courses following the current health regulations. Please get in touch for more info about this topic.

What happens at the end of the acting classes?
After the last session of our course, we’ll host a public presentation of our work to a selected audience of friends and families. This will give you the opportunity to shine on stage and to put yourself to the test in a public performance. Afterwards, you can communicate with the teacher to see if you’re eligible for follow-up intermediate acting courses!

I’m younger than 18 years old, can I join?
Most of the times YES, if you are a teenager. But your parent or guardian MUST get in contact with us before and inform us of your willingness to join. We might ask you to sign an agreement form. In general, our classes are meant for adults, 18+ years old.

What else should I consider before registering?
The most important aspect for you is to make sure that you can attend most of the sessions. If you miss one or two classes it will be fine, but missing more might limit what you learn from the course and might affect the preparation of the whole group and your participation in the show, so please check your schedule and make sure you can attend the classes as well as the final show.

Trainer

Alex Casadio, acting trainer and founder of Instant Theatre Berlin. He wrote the acting manual …And Acting for all and he’s constantly refining his own acting teaching method based on acting as natural behaviour.

Alex created Instant Theatre Berlin in 2013 and he’s active as an acting trainer, theatre director, playwright, improvisation coach and performer in the Berlin scene. He created and performs on the Instant Theatre Youtube channel.
